Two poems by Inke Sunila March, 2010 meeting Order of Runeberg, Lodge 205
1st poem:
"Sampling Shanty" Plowing the Sound toward distant shores, culling
oysters and taking care of chores. Salt water sprays and mud on the
face, The moon and the tide set out pace. On the ship the crew
must be one, and we rest at home when the work week is done.
2nd poem: "To the Urban Sea"
Miles of beaches with white sand and middens, green
murky depths with Amphipods hidden.
Floating debris and heavy
metals, hundreds of sea anemones opening their petals.
Invasive
species and aromatic hydrocarbons, schools of bluefish swimming with
tarpons.
Late-summer hypoxia due to red tides, flashes of
Menidia with silvery sides.
You have been hurt, but you know how
to forgive. I came from far, and you gave me a place to live.
Finnish march from Russo-Turkish War 1877 Sung by Roy Kosonen March, 2010, Order of Runeberg, Lodge 205
Lyrics to the song: Long have we suffered from cold and hunger, fighting in the Balkan Mountains (repeats). Refrain: Oh dear homeland, Finland sweet land of the North, there is no land to be found that is dearer than you! The music played when our boys marched up against Gornyi Dubnyak [refers to battle of that name] (repeats). Refrain... Our boys lie buried in the Balkan sands, on the other side of the Danube (repeats). Refrain... If my body should die, my soul will remain as an inheritance of my dear land of birth (repeats). Refrain.... Hurrah! Now our company is homeward bound, to Finland's beloved shores! (repeats) Refrain...
